Finding Joy in the Special Needs Parenting Journey - Carmen Broussard

Turning Challenges into Opportunities for Growth

December 1, 2023

As special needs parents, we often face unique challenges that can feel overwhelming. But with the right mindset and support, it's possible to find joy and meaning in this unexpected journey. In this article, we'll explore insights from one mother's 17-year experience parenting a child with complex medical needs, and how she's learned to thrive amidst the difficulties.

1. Embracing Your New Normal

When Carmen's son was born with a rare condition called prune belly syndrome, their lives changed dramatically. Multiple surgeries, a 151-day NICU stay, and ongoing medical interventions became their new reality.

"At first, I mourned the loss of the 'normal' pregnancy and newborn experience I had imagined," Carmen shares. "But over time, I realized this was our unique path, and there was beauty to be found in it if I looked for it."

Some ways Carmen learned to embrace their situation:

  • Finding moments of joy and connection, even in hospital rooms
  • Celebrating small victories and milestones
  • Reframing challenges as opportunities for growth

2. Prioritizing Self-Care

Caring for a medically complex child can be all-consuming. Carmen emphasizes the importance of intentional self-care:

"You have to put your own oxygen mask on first," she explains. "Even small acts of self-care can make a big difference in your ability to show up for your family."

Some of Carmen's self-care strategies include:

  • Taking a relaxing shower
  • Maintaining personal grooming routines
  • Setting boundaries around work and caregiving responsibilities
  • Asking for help when needed

3. Nurturing Your Marriage

The stress of special needs parenting can strain even the strongest relationships. Carmen credits open communication and teamwork with her husband as key to their strong 18-year marriage.

"We approach this as equal partners," she says. "Some days I'm giving 100% while he's at 50%, other days it's reversed. But we're in this together."

Tips for strengthening your partnership:

  • Have regular check-ins about how you're both doing
  • Find ways to connect that don't revolve around caregiving
  • Be willing to step up when your partner is struggling
  • Seek counseling if needed to work through challenges

4. Supporting Siblings

Carmen's 14-year-old daughter has grown up with a brother who requires significant care and attention. While this comes with challenges, it's also shaped her into a compassionate, resilient young woman.

"We try to carve out special one-on-one time and create opportunities for her to just be a kid," Carmen explains. "But we also involve her in age-appropriate ways and celebrate the unique bond she has with her brother."

Some ways to support siblings:

  • Schedule regular "dates" with each child
  • Acknowledge their feelings and challenges
  • Find ways for them to contribute that make them feel valued
  • Connect them with other siblings of special needs kids

By reframing their journey as an adventure rather than a tragedy, Carmen and her family have found unexpected blessings amidst the difficulties. While the path of special needs parenting isn't easy, it can be deeply rewarding when approached with flexibility, teamwork, and an open heart.
